Why You Should Visit

A large open-air handmade market in Tadasu no Mori, the ancient forest of Shimogamo Shrine (a UNESCO World Heritage site). Over the two days some 370 booths sell accessories, fabric goods, woodwork, leather, ceramics and paper crafts alongside baked sweets and bread, with 16 food trucks serving freshly made food and drinks. Seating is set up among the trees, and an acoustic live stage, the Forest Concert, runs on the same grounds. Admission and the concert are both free, so a shrine visit and a browse fit into one trip.

FAQ

Is there an admission fee or a reservation?
Admission is free and no reservation is required. The Forest Concert held at the same time is also free to watch, and you can come and go as you like.
Does it go ahead in the rain?
Yes, it is held in the rain. It is cancelled only if a storm warning is issued for Kyoto City on the day, so check the organiser's official site in the morning if the weather looks rough.
What is on sale?
Handmade accessories, fabric goods, woodwork, leather, floral crafts, ceramics and paper crafts, plus baked sweets and bread. There are 370 booths in total over the two days, along with 16 food and drink trucks.
Is it manageable with children?
Booths line the forest path and there are seating areas among the trees, with food trucks on site, so you can break up the walk. The forest gives plenty of shade, which helps in early September.
