Why You Should Visit
Rurikoin, a temple in Yase at the foot of Mount Hiei, opens its gates only during special viewing seasons in spring, summer and autumn. The autumn opening runs from October 1 to December 13 and is famous for its "reflection foliage": maple leaves in the garden mirrored on the polished desks of the second-floor study hall. The moss of the Ruri Garden, which seems to glow a lapis blue, and the maples along the approach from the gate are also highlights. Peak color usually arrives from late November to early December. From November 13 to December 6 entry is by reservation only, so October and early November, when no booking is needed, are an option for seeing the first colors.
