Venue & access: Sanzen-in Temple, Ohara, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto From Kyoto Station bus stop C3, take Kyoto Bus route 17 to Ohara (about 1 hour), then walk about 10 minutes. Or take a Kyoto Bus from stop 3 at Kokusaikaikan Station (about 23 minutes) to Ohara. The temple has no parking.

Why You Should Visit

Sanzen-in, a Tendai temple in the mountain village of Ohara about an hour north of central Kyoto by bus, holds its Momiji (autumn leaves) Festival through the foliage season. During the festival the temple opens the shrine of its normally hidden Golden Fudo (Konjiki Fudo) image, and goma fire rituals are held on Saturdays and Sundays. Two seasonal goshuin stamps are also offered: a special Golden Fudo seal written in gold ink on dark blue paper, and a limited paper-cut seal of the principal image, Yakushi Nyorai. Come for the maples over the temple's moss gardens and stay for a rare look at a hidden Buddha.

FAQ

When are the goma fire rituals held?

On Saturdays and Sundays during the festival. The temple's notice does not give start times.

When can I see the hidden Golden Fudo?

Its shrine is opened throughout the festival, from October 24 to December 6.

Can I drive there?

Sanzen-in has no parking of its own, so you would need to use nearby lots. The Kyoto Bus is the more reliable option in foliage season.
