Why You Should Visit

On the road up to Takao in northwest Kyoto, Hiraoka Hachimangu opens the inner sanctuary of its main hall each autumn to show the "Flower Ceiling." The shrine is said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) as the guardian of nearby Jingo-ji, and each of the 44 panels formed by the ceiling beams is painted with a brightly coloured flower. Admission includes a talk by the chief priest and a cup of ofukucha (auspicious tea), so you hear the story behind the paintings as you look up at them. The ceiling is shown only in spring and autumn; the autumn viewing runs to the end of November, and the shrine is an easy stop on the way to the Takao maples.
