Why You Should Visit

For one week each November, Jingoji Temple, set halfway up Mt. Takao in northwest Kyoto, opens its Daishido Hall (Important Cultural Property), which is normally closed to the public. The hall stands on the site of the quarters where Kobo Daishi (Kukai) lived, and inside its shrine cabinet is a wooden relief carving of Kobo Daishi, also an Important Cultural Property. The image is said to have been carved in 1302 by the Buddhist sculptor Jōki, copying a statue of Kukai at Kongōchōji Temple in Tosa Province. The opening coincides with the start of the autumn color season in Takao, one of Kyoto's best-known maple-viewing areas, making it a good reason to head out to the temple early in the season.
