Why You Should Visit
For two days in the autumn foliage season, nine shrines, temples and gardens across Yawata, south of Kyoto, hold special openings at the same time. Highlights include a special inner-sanctuary visit at Iwashimizu Hachimangu, Kano Sansetsu's "Waterfall" painting shown in the main hall of Jin'oji, and the interior of Hakkakudo, an octagonal hall standing on an ancient burial mound. Zenpo-ritsuji serves tea among the maples and lights up its foliage at night, and Hiko Jinja hosts iaido and kagura offerings. Limited-edition goshuin stamps are available at several sites, making this a good full-day route for foliage and heritage.
