Why You Should Visit

Each autumn, Nagaoka Tenmangu Shrine in Nagaokakyo, southwest of Kyoto, lights up its grounds in the evening for the Kyoto Nishiyama Nagaoka Tenmangu Hanatoro. Bamboo lanterns line the approach from the great torii gate on Hachijogaike Pond to the worship hall, and Kinkei-en, the shrine's maple garden completed in 2007, is illuminated as the autumn leaves turn. The vermilion shrine buildings and red maples glow against the night. Viewing is free, and the shrine is within walking distance of Hankyu Nagaoka-Tenjin Station, making it an easy evening stop on the way back from sightseeing in Kyoto.
