Why You Should Visit
Yokokuji, the Nagaokakyo temple known as Yanagidani Kannon, revered for its Kannon of the eyes and credited as the birthplace of hanachozu (flower-filled water basins), holds its Momiji Week during the autumn foliage season. The grounds in the Nishiyama hills turn red and gold, and maple leaves float in the water basins. During the week the Kamishoin hall opens for its autumn special viewing, letting you look out over the maple garden from the tatami rooms. Small-group, reservation-only viewings are also offered early in the morning before opening and on the evenings of 5 and 6 December. The temple is a fair way from any station, so allow about half a day including travel. A good choice if you want autumn leaves at a quieter mountain temple.
