Why You Should Visit

Entoku-in, a small sub-temple of Kodai-ji tied to Nene, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, stays open into the evening during the fall foliage season. The lights come on at 17:00 and the last entry is 21:30. About 100 maple trees grow inside the grounds, and the temple is known for tiny autumn leaves, said to be the kind Nene loved, that look like a baby's palm. A visit through the north and south gardens takes about 30 minutes, and during the same period the temple shows the Teikanzu folding screens handed down in the Toyotomi family. It sits just below Kodai-ji, so the two light-ups combine easily into one evening walk along Nene-no-Michi lane. This is a quieter, more intimate night viewing than the big Higashiyama temples.

From JR Kyoto Station, take city bus 206 to Higashiyama-Yasui, then walk about 7 minutes east. By car, use the Kodai-ji car park (one hour free if you visit Entoku-in only).

FAQ

Do I need to book?

No. Individual visitors buy tickets at the gate on the day. Payment is cash only.

Can I combine it with Kodai-ji?

Yes. Kodai-ji holds its autumn night viewing over the same period, and the combined ticket (¥1,200) covers both temples. They are a short walk apart, just up the steps from the Kodai-ji car park.

When do the leaves peak?

It varies by year, but usually from mid-November to early December.
