Why You Should Visit

Shoren-in, a monzeki temple in the Awataguchi area of Higashiyama, opens for special night viewing in autumn. Inspired by its principal image, Shijoko Nyorai, "a Buddha wrapped in light," the entire grounds are illuminated. You can see the autumn leaves both from inside the halls and while strolling the pond garden, and the temple's protected giant camphor tree and bamboo grove are lit up too. Night viewing is separate from daytime admission. Close to Chion-in and Heian Shrine, it suits anyone spending an autumn evening in Higashiyama.

NOTE

  • Night viewing is separate from daytime admission (visitors are swapped over)
  • Held at Shoren-in only; not at the Shogunzuka Seiryuden
