Why You Should Visit

To mark 130 years since Heian Jingu was founded, the shrine opens for an immersive night walk for about a month in November. Light installations are layered over the autumn foliage, and visitors move through five zones built around the theme of Gekka, or moonlight blossoms. The lighting is produced by Nexyz Wonderwall, a studio known for immersive light art. Heian Jingu is wrapped by Shin-en, a stroll garden of about 33,000 square metres, and the event shows the maples in a way you only get after dark. Running from 17:30, it fits neatly around dinner in the Okazaki area and suits anyone who wants an unhurried evening in autumn Kyoto.

NOTE

Five lighting zones:

  • LUNAR BLOOM
  • LUNAR VEIL
  • FLORAL GLOW
  • LUNAR MIRROR
  • DREAM LANTERN

Ticket note:

  • Overseas visitors pay a flat 3,000 yen on all days
