kyoto-wide NewsIf you are planning to rent a kimono in Kyoto, the Kyoto Kimono Passport turns that outfit into free museum entry, temple discounts and small gifts. It is run by a committee of Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto City and the city's kimono industry groups, who want to see more people wearing kimono around town. The 2026-27 edition started on October 1, 2026, and according to Kyoto Prefecture about 250 facilities and shops across the prefecture take part.
Seven museums and gardens let you in free. Four of them are run by Kyoto Prefecture, and their free entry ends on December 25, 2026. Temples and shrines do not offer free entry; most give a small gift or knock a little off the admission fee.

A gift or a free experience
This guide covers museums, temples, historic sites and kimono shops; restaurant, cafe, shop, hotel and hands-on experience offers are listed by category on the official site. Offers and dates can change by venue, so the official offer list has the latest details before you go.
How to use the passport
The passport is the Kyoto Kimono Passport page on the official site. There is no card to collect and nothing to sign up for.

Not included
No paper passport, no free rides
Last year's passport screen is no longer valid. There are no free subway or city bus rides and no taxi discount.
On yukata, the official site gives two answers. The official English guide says to wear a kimono "or a lightweight yukata in summer", and its FAQ says offers are "open to those wearing yukata". The Japanese user guide adds that each facility decides its own standard for yukata and similar summer wear.
In Western clothes, the passport does not work as a rule. The exception is kimono rental shops, which the official guide excludes from the Western-clothes rule. Kimono and accessory stores have no such exception.

Where no end date is listed, the general rule for facilities is that offers run until September 30, 2027. At the Museum of Kyoto, the third-floor film theater can charge for some screenings, and there is no special exhibition from November 16 to 27.
The Botanical Garden and the Garden of Fine Arts sit side by side, both right by Exit 3 of Kitayama Station on the Karasuma subway line. The Garden of Fine Arts shows eight masterpieces, including Michelangelo's "Last Judgment", reproduced on ceramic panels in a facility designed by Tadao Ando, and you view them outdoors. For autumn events and highlights at the Botanical Garden, see its event page.

Kimono rental shops
The Wasou and Rental Shops page lists 52 kimono shops and rental shops, 51 of them with an offer. Rental shop offers include 5 to 10% off the rental fee, one free add-on (worth ¥550), and a free hair set or hair ornament. At Yumeyakata, the discount (¥4,180 → ¥3,762) applies to reservations only.
Booking a kimono rental
If you don't own a kimono, you can book a rental near Kyoto Station or in Gion in advance on Rakuten Travel Experiences.
- Kimono Rental Miyabi, Kyoto Station Hachijo Exit (from ¥3,300, 1 min from the Hachijo exit)
- Kyoto Tower Sando shop (from ¥3,960, 2 min from Kyoto Station)
- Gion shop (from ¥3,960)
At Miyabi, ¥3,300 is the price when you book by the day before; same-day bookings are ¥4,400. The Kyoto Tower Sando and Gion plans include dressing and accessories.
Fixing a loose kimono
Kimono can loosen after a day of walking. Places marked "Kimono Rescue" will tidy it up for free, and places marked as rest stops lend you a space to fix it yourself. Neither is a dressing or changing service, and neither takes reservations, so you may have to wait when it is busy. Kyoto Prefecture calls this "kimono rescue" and lists department stores among the places offering it. Among museums, the Uji City Tale of Genji Museum, Furuta Oribe Museum, Kyoto Kachokan and Rakuto Iho-kan carry the rest-stop mark.
Who runs it
The scheme is organized by the "Kimono no Niau Machi Kyoto" (a city where kimono look good) executive committee, whose members include Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto City, the Kyoto Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and kimono trade groups such as the Nishijin textile and Kyo-Yuzen dyeing associations. Enquiries go to the passport office's official LINE account, weekdays 10:00 to 17:00 (closed on public holidays and over the New Year).
