Why You Should Visit

Through the Kyoto Kimono Passport scheme, anyone visiting the Kyoto Botanical Garden in kimono between 1 October and 25 December gets in free (normally 500 yen for adults). Just open the passport screen on the official website on your phone and show it to the staff; yukata, hakama and furisode are also accepted according to the official FAQ. Opened in 1924, this is Japan's oldest public botanical garden. In autumn the maples turn colour around the ponds of Nakaragi-no-mori, the garden's only natural woodland, and a chrysanthemum show runs from 20 October to 15 November. A good stop on a day spent exploring Kyoto in kimono.

NOTE

Conditions
  • Wear kimono and show the Kyoto Kimono Passport (web screen) to the staff on your smartphone or tablet

Highlights in the garden

  • Nakaragi Shrine: an outlying shrine of Kamigamo Shrine inside the woodland, long revered as a guardian of weaving, as silk farming once thrived in the area
  • Camphor Avenue: a 200 m avenue dating from the garden's opening, lined with 75 camphor trees over 100 years old
  • Conservatory: about 4,500 plant varieties in eight rooms. Included in garden admission, open 10:00–16:00 (last entry 15:30). The day-night reversal room is closed November to April
