Why You Should Visit

Yamamoto Noh Theater of Osaka stages a special Noh program at Tokuzen-ji, a sub-temple of Daitoku-ji in Kyoto's Murasakino district, as part of the 4th Japan International Arts Festival. Admission is free with advance registration. The afternoon opens with a short history of Noh, then invites everyone to chant a passage from the play Hagoromo together, introduces Noh masks and costumes, and features a mini-concert of the hayashi instruments with commentary, before closing with a performance of Hagoromo. Performers include Kanze-school lead actors Akihiro Yamamoto, a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (collective designation), and Reikou Yamamoto. A hands-on introduction for anyone who wants to try Noh, not just watch it, inside a Zen temple.
