Why You Should Visit

A handmade market held on the fourth Sunday of every month in the grounds of Kamigamo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Around 150 booths fill the shrine at its busiest, selling accessories, fabric goods, clothing, ceramics and woodwork, plus baked sweets and simmered savouries. Only makers selling their own work may take part, so the person behind the table is the person who made it — ask about materials or how to use a piece and you get the answer first-hand. Admission is free and you can come and go as you please, easily combined with a visit to the shrine.

FAQ

Is there an admission fee?
No — admission is free and you can come and go without a reservation. The only cost is parking: on market days the shrine lot charges a flat ¥1,000 per car (9:00–17:00).
Is it held in the rain?
Yes, it goes ahead in the rain. It can still be cancelled if a typhoon, heavy snow or similar is forecast, so check the official site on the morning of the market.
When is the next market?
It runs on the fourth Sunday of each month. There is no market on a fifth Sunday, so in August 2026 the only date is the 23rd (nothing on the 30th).
Is it manageable with children?
Stalls line the flat approach path through the grounds, so strollers are fine. There are food stalls with baked sweets and the like, and it works well as a short stop combined with a shrine visit.
