Why You Should Visit

Once a year, Daikoji, a small Pure Land temple near Fushimi's Otesuji arcade, opens its main hall for a festival of thanks and prayer for the ears. Now in its third year, it centres on a special viewing of the temple's Medicine Buddha, said to date from the mid-Heian period and long worshipped for healing ear ailments, guided by a monk's talk. New this year are self-guided viewing, a sencha tea ceremony and a puzzle hunt around the neighbourhood, alongside blindfold rakugo and sutra copying. A free market of local Fushimi brands fills the temple grounds.
