Why You Should Visit

Myorenji, the head temple of the Honmon Hokke sect in Kyoto's Nishijin district, opens as a "whole-temple museum" each spring and autumn, and this is the autumn session. The highlight is the Juroku Rakan (Sixteen Arhats) dry rock garden, with the famous Gagyu-seki stone, said to be a gift from Toyotomi Hideyoshi, at its center and a contrast of black stones and white sand. Visitors can also view sliding-door paintings of the four seasons. The garden has Oeshiki cherry trees that bloom from October to April, and Kitayama cedars placed to evoke Hasegawa Tohaku's painting of cedar trees. A good stop for anyone who wants a quiet look at a temple garden and its paintings.
