Why You Should Visit

Torin-in, a sub-temple of Myoshin-ji known for its garden of sala trees, opens its gates after dark for ten autumn evenings. Handmade tile lanterns called bonto, crafted by the head priest, and about 800 candles set on old roof tiles cast a soft glow over the white sand and moss of the gardens. In the Horai garden, the candles are arranged to spell out a Zen phrase, and the only sounds are insects and the wind. Unlike the electric light-ups at Kyoto's larger temples, everything here is lit by flame alone, which makes it one of the quietest night viewings in the city.
