Why You Should Visit
The Former Mitsui Family Shimogamo Villa, about five minutes on foot from Demachiyanagi Station, opens the normally closed second floor and third-floor lookout tower of its main house for a limited autumn period. From the second floor you look down on the garden in its autumn colours, and the lookout tower, glazed on all four sides, takes in the Higashiyama hills. The tower is visited by advance booking in 15-minute slots, while the first and second floors can be entered on the day. The opening runs from 19 November to 6 December, closed on Wednesdays. It pairs well with a walk around Shimogamo Shrine or the Kamo River delta if you want to see a Kyoto garden and hills from above during the foliage season.
