Why You Should Visit
Hasedera in Sakurai, Nara, holds its Momiji Festival through the autumn-leaf season. During the festival you can enter the National Treasure main hall, normally closed to visitors, and touch the feet of the principal image, the Eleven-faced Kannon, while about 300 potted chrysanthemums line the Arashi-no-saka steps as the Kinshu Chrysanthemum Corridor. 2026 marks the temple's 1,300th anniversary, so November also brings memorial services, imayo song and dance offerings in the main hall, special sermons by monks and a puzzle rally through the temple town. A good fit if you want to see Buddhist images up close on an autumn-leaf visit.
