Why You Should Visit

Soni Highlands in Soni Village, Nara, is known for its sweeping fields of silver pampas grass, and each autumn about 200 lanterns light the path around Okame Pond from sunset. The event ran every autumn from 2003 but was suspended from 2023 because the lanterns had worn out; the village then rebuilt them with hometown-tax donations and brought it back. The lanterns coincide with the pampas grass season, and you can walk the lantern-lit trail around the pond until 21:00. Admission is free, making it an easy way to stretch a day on the plateau into the evening.
