Why You Should Visit

An evening opening at Muroji, the mountain temple in Uda, Nara, long known as "Women's Koya" because it admitted women when Mount Koya did not. On autumn weekends and holidays the temple stays open after dark, and you can walk up through halls and stairways set into the forested slope above the Muro River while the autumn leaves are lit. In 2026 it runs on nine days across the November weekends and the Labor Thanksgiving holiday. This year it is also part of "Yamato Kannon Momiji Kairo 2026," a joint autumn program with Hasedera, Okadera and Tsubosakadera, with wagasa umbrella art and bamboo lanterns placed at each temple. Hasedera by day and Muroji by night makes an easy pairing in the same area.
