Why You Should Visit

For just five evenings in the autumn-leaf season, Okadera in Asuka Village stays open after dark. Wagasa paper umbrellas are lit in front of the three-story pagoda, a tower of umbrellas is colored with projection mapping, and the purification fountain glows with glass marbles. Okadera is one of the temples in the "Pilgrimage of Light," alongside Tsubosakadera and Muroji, which hold night openings in the same season. In 2026 it opens on the November 21–23 holiday weekend and on November 28 and 29. A day exploring Asuka followed by an evening climb up to the temple makes an easy plan.
