Why You Should Visit

The autumn grand festival of Sumisaka Shrine in Haibara, Uda City, held every year on November 2 and 3. After the eve rite on the night of the 2nd, the shrine's deity is carried to the otabisho (temporary shrine) at Nishitoge near the shrine's former site, and on the afternoon of the 3rd a procession brings it back about 1 km downhill to the main hall. Red shields and spears, linked to a plague-ending legend in the Kojiki, travel through town with the mikoshi alongside participants in court robes and samurai armour. After the rite at the main hall, three mikoshi are jostled together and rice cakes are scattered to the crowd. A good chance to see a local autumn festival of the shrine said to guard the eastern gate of ancient Yamato, right on the streets.
