cost: Free to view. Yoshinoyama Tourist Parking: cars ¥1,000, motorcycles ¥500 (Oct 20 – Nov 30)
Venue & access: Shimo-senbon to Naka-senbon, Yoshinoyama, Yoshino From Kintetsu Yoshino Station, take the Yoshinoyama Ropeway to Yoshinoyama Station (runs daily Oct 23 – Nov 30). By car, use Yoshinoyama Tourist Parking (Shimo-senbon Parking).

Why You Should Visit

Yoshinoyama in Nara, famous for its cherry blossoms, lights up its gates, temple approaches and shrine paths into the night during the autumn foliage season. Thirteen spots on the mountain are lit from 16:30 to 22:00, from Shimo-senbon Park past the Kuromon gate and the bronze torii to the inner courtyard of Kinpusenji's head temple, the approach to Yoshimizu Shrine and the gate of Chikurin-in. During the light-up period the Yoshinoyama Ropeway and local buses run every day, and drivers can use the tourist parking at Shimo-senbon. A good way to stay on after a daytime foliage walk and see Yoshinoyama's temple approaches after dark.

FAQ

Is there a fee to see the illumination?

No. The lights are on outdoor gates and approaches and are free to see. If you drive, Yoshinoyama Tourist Parking costs ¥1,000 per car.

Can I drive up the mountain?

You can park at Yoshinoyama Tourist Parking (Shimo-senbon Parking). From October 24 to November 30, the road from Katte Shrine down to the parking is one-way downhill only.
