Why You Should Visit

Hokuendo Hall at Kofukuji in Nara stays closed most of the year and opens to visitors only for short periods in spring and autumn. Inside are the National Treasure seated Maitreya Buddha and the standing statues of Muchaku (Asanga) and Seshin (Vasubandhu). The autumn opening runs for 16 days from October 24 to November 8 with no closing days. The hall is small, so entry may be paused temporarily when crowded. It fits easily into a walk around Nara Park.
