Why You Should Visit

Tanzan Shrine in Tonomine, Sakurai, enshrines Fujiwara no Kamatari and holds kemari offerings in spring and autumn. Players dressed in traditional kemari costumes kick a deerskin ball at the main hall as an offering to the deity. According to the shrine, Prince Naka-no-Oe and Kamatari first met at a kemari gathering at Gangoji (today's Asuka-dera), so the game is tied directly to the shrine's origins. The autumn festival takes place on November 3 (Culture Day) from 11:00. A good pick for anyone who wants to see the elegant court game at a shrine linked to the Taika Reform.

NOTE

Origin of the Kemari Festival

  • Legend says Kamatari picked up the shoe Prince Naka-no-Oe lost while playing kemari and handed it back, beginning the friendship that led to the Taika Reform
