Why You Should Visit

An annual two-day autumn gathering at Shojokein, a head temple of the Jodo Shu (Pure Land) school in Kyoto's Kamigyo ward, now in its fourth year. This year's theme is "the light of Amida embracing the family." Writer Nami Kishida and Tibetan-born singer Baima Yangjin give special talks on family, while singers perform on an outdoor stage in the temple grounds and the main hall hosts gagaku court music, memorial services and short Buddhist talks for children. The Muromachi-period picture scroll "Nakifudo Engi Emaki," an Important Cultural Property, is on special display, and there is a market, food trucks and parent-and-child craft workshops. Admission is free, making it an easy way to spend a relaxed day inside a working Kyoto temple.
