Kyoto Bread Festival at Kamigamo Shrine 2026

Why You Should Visit

Kyoto's biggest bread festival, held for two days only in the grounds of Kamigamo Shrine, a World Heritage site. It began in 2015 to mark the shrine's once-in-21-years rebuilding rite; this is the 10th edition, with some 360,000 visitors to date. Twenty-two stalls, mostly hotels and bakeries from Kyoto, the self-styled "city of bread", sell event-only breads: pastries from the Four Seasons and Westin Miyako, a hamburger sandwich from an old Arashiyama butcher, curry bread with Iki beef from Nagasaki. Hours are an hour longer this year, running to 16:00. Free to enter; a good fit if you want a shrine visit and a bread crawl in one trip.

Right at the Kamigamo-jinja-mae (Misonoguchi-cho) city bus stop, or a 5-minute walk from Kamigamo Misono-bashi. Take a city bus from Kyoto Station or Kitaoji subway station; the organiser asks visitors to use public transport.

FAQ

Is there an admission fee?

Entry is free. Bread is sold for cash only, so bring cash.

Does it get crowded?

Some 360,000 people have visited over the years and each day ends when stalls sell out. If you have a particular bread in mind, arrive for the 10:00 opening.

Can I drive there?

The organiser asks visitors to use public transport. City buses run to Kamigamo-jinja-mae from Kyoto Station and Kitaoji subway station.
