Why You Should Visit
An immersive exhibition about death, the afterlife and hell in Japanese Buddhist art, opening first at Namba Parks Museum in Osaka. Using TOPPAN's digital archiving technology, famous hell paintings are reproduced at full size down to the brushwork and the patina of age: the National Treasure Jigoku-zoshi (Hell Scrolls), the Important Cultural Property Rokudo-e (Paintings of the Six Realms), and the Great Hell Painting held by Chogaku-ji temple in Nara. Large screens bring demons and sinners to life, and the route follows the soul's journey through decay, judgment by the Ten Kings and the Eight Great Hells. A good pick for anyone curious about Buddhist art or how Japan imagined the afterlife.
