Why You Should Visit

A selection of Edo-period painting drawn from the British Museum's Japanese collection of some 40,000 objects. Highlights include Kitagawa Utamaro's hand-painted Courtesan Reading a Letter, Maruyama Okyo's Tiger Crossing screens and Katsushika Hokusai's preparatory drawings for the Great Picture Book of Everything — several shown in Japan for the first time — plus prints by eight leading ukiyo-e artists including Sharaku, Hokusai and Hiroshige. Kano-school sliding-door paintings split between Aomori, London and Seattle are reunited for the first time in about 150 years. No timed entry; same-day tickets are available.

TICKETS / REGISTRATION
No timed entry and no advance reservation needed. Same-day tickets are sold at the museum's 2F ticket machines and counter (entry may be limited, or switched to timed entry, when crowded). Advance tickets go on sale at 10:00 on 24 Aug 2026 via ART PASS, the official online ticket site (etix), Lawson Ticket, Ticket Pia and others (not sold at the museum). A combo ticket with the NHK Sunday Museum 50th Anniversary Exhibition is 4,000 yen (31 Oct–20 Dec, via ART PASS and the 2F machines).

Do I need to book in advance?
No. There is no timed entry and same-day tickets are available. Entry limits or a switch to timed entry are possible when crowded, so check the official site shortly before visiting.
Are there evening hours?
Yes — Fridays the museum stays open until 20:00 (last entry 19:30). Other days close at 17:00.
Is it open over New Year?
Closed on 31 December and 1 January. Open from 2 January; open on the Monday holiday 11 January and closed the following Tuesday, 12 January.
