Why You Should Visit
The summer grand festival of Iwaya Shrine, one of Akashi's oldest shrines, held every third Sunday of July. The highlight is the Oshataka Boat Ritual, designated an intangible folk cultural property by Akashi City: fifteen parishioners in white loincloths and red headbands wade into the sea, pushing small boats topped with sakaki branches out and back while chanting "oshataka". At the shrine you can also pass through the chinowa grass ring said to purify the first half of the year. A plain, unpolished local rite you can watch up close on a midsummer shore.
