Kobe Sports Park : Things to See & Do

Spread across the hilly terrain of Suma Ward, Kobe Sports Park covers 55.6 hectares. Its direct connection to Sogo Undo Koen Station on the Subway Seishin-Yamate Line makes it easily accessible, and it has long served as the hub of sports and recreation for Kobe residents. At the park's core is Universe Memorial Stadium, built for the 1985 Universiade in Kobe and seating 45,000. It has since hosted J-League football and international athletics — a stage where athletes have competed for decades. Adjacent Hotto Motto Field Kobe hosts professional baseball games, while Green Arena Kobe is a multipurpose indoor venue capable of hosting major concerts and martial arts events. But elite sport is only part of the story. Areas named 'Water Kingdom', 'Nature Kingdom', and 'Adventure Kingdom' offer long slides, jumbo slides, and other activities for all ages. In spring, Cosmos Hill turns golden with rapeseed flowers; in autumn, its namesake cosmos bloom in waves of pink and white. Plenty of visitors come with no sporting agenda at all, drawn simply by the seasonal displays. Whether you have a ticket or just a free afternoon, Kobe Sports Park is always worth the trip.

Umanose Ridge (Suma Alps)

Umanose Ridge (Suma Alps)

At the western end of the Rokko range, between Mt. Yokoo (312m) and Mt. Higashiyama (253m), lies the Suma Alps — a ridge of weathered granite whose highlight is the Umanose ('horseback') traverse. Crossing the narrow rocky spine with drops on both sides delivers a real alpine thrill, with sweeping views over Osaka Bay and the city of Kobe. Despite the low elevation, it is one of the most dramatic sections of the Rokko Zenzan traverse. There are rope-assisted sections and rock scrambles, so it suits beginner-to-intermediate hikers with proper footwear.
