Mount Takatori : Things to See & Do
Mount Takatori is a beloved neighborhood mountain in Nagata Ward, Kobe. The hike from the trailhead to the summit shrine (Takatori Shrine) typically takes about 30–50 minutes one way, or 1–1.5 hours round trip. Long stone staircases, weathered torii gates, and small shrines lend the trail a solemn, almost sacred atmosphere, and friendly cats often appear along the way. I started from Kosoku-Nagata / Nagata subway station and walked to the trailhead. Taking my time with photos, the climb took about an hour and the descent around 30 minutes. The stairs are no joke, but the panoramic view of Kobe and Osaka Bay from the summit was absolutely worth it.
Beginner-Friendly Hike
Reach the summit in about 30–40 minutes via well-maintained trails.
Mountain Teahouses
Shimizu, Nakano, Tsukimi and Yasui teahouses dot the trail. Hours are early morning only — check ahead before visiting.
City & Bay Views
Enjoy panoramic views of Kobe and Osaka Bay.
Cats Along the Trail
Friendly cats often appear along the trail and near the teahouses.
Solemn Stone Stairs & Torii
Stone stairs, torii gates and small shrines create a mystical path leading to the summit shrine.
Mount Takatori : Photo Spots & Tips

Best Timing

Most teahouses close before noon, so morning hikes are recommended. The trail darkens quickly under the trees in late afternoon — plan to descend before sunset.
Access
Two main trailheads. From Kosoku-Nagata / Nagata subway stations, take the east trailhead via Nagata Shrine, about 20 min on foot. From Shin-Nagata or Itayado, the west trailhead is closer — a loop hike up one side and down the other works well. Kobe Coffee Monogatari near the east trailhead is a handy pre-hike coffee and restroom stop.
