Umanose Ridge (Suma Alps)

馬の背(須磨アルプス)

At the western end of the Rokko range, between Mt. Yokoo (312m) and Mt. Higashiyama (253m), lies the Suma Alps — a ridge of weathered granite whose highlight is the Umanose ('horseback') traverse. Crossing the narrow rocky spine with drops on both sides delivers a real alpine thrill, with sweeping views over Osaka Bay and the city of Kobe. Despite the low elevation, it is one of the most dramatic sections of the Rokko Zenzan traverse. There are rope-assisted sections and rock scrambles, so it suits beginner-to-intermediate hikers with proper footwear.

Opening Hours
Open at all times (hike in daylight — the ridge is dangerous after dark)
cost
Free
Suggested Duration
About 3 hours
Best Time
Year-round (spring and autumn are most comfortable; avoid rainy or windy days)
Accessibility
Beginner to intermediate. Rope-assisted sections and rock scrambles; grippy hiking shoes and gloves recommended. The weathered granite is brittle, so take extra care when wet. There are no toilets or shops between Myohoji and Mt. Togao, so stock up near the stations (facilities are available in the Takakuradai neighborhood beyond Mt. Togao).

Access

About 50–60 minutes on foot from Myohoji Station (Subway) via Mt. Higashiyama. Also accessible from Itayado Station (Sanyo Railway/Subway). Popular options include a loop descending toward Suma Rikyu Park, or the full traverse from Sumaurakoen Station over Mt. Togao and Mt. Yokoo to Itayado (4–5 hours).

Note

Sample routes: - Myohoji Sta. → Mt. Higashiyama → Umanose → Mt. Yokoo (continue or descend) - Loop down from Umanose via Mt. Higashiyama toward Itayado, with a stop at Suma Rikyu Park Gear: - Hiking shoes with good grip - Gloves (useful on rock and rope sections) - Water (no resupply points between Myohoji and Mt. Togao) Note: the weathered granite can be brittle — keep three points of contact rather than relying on ropes and chains.

FAQ

Can beginners cross the Umanose?
It's beginner-to-intermediate level. Most first-timers can cross if they're not severely afraid of heights, but wear grippy shoes and avoid rainy or windy days.
Is it OK with children?
Children used to hiking often cross it, but the ridge has drops on both sides — keep an adult in front and behind, and don't push it.
Are there toilets?
Not on the ridge. Use the facilities at Myohoji or Itayado Station before you start.
