Why You Should Visit

The autumn grand festival at Ikuta Shrine in the heart of Sannomiya. Held on 20 September, the Autumn Grand Festival and Ujiko Hohei-sai ranks alongside the spring Ikuta Matsuri as one of the shrine's most important rites, praying for the safety and prosperity of its parish across central Kobe. The shrine's annual calendar also lists the Koshiki-sai on the 19th, evening entertainments such as takigi noh and gagaku across 19–23 September, and tea and flower offering rites during the festival period. The 2026 programme has not been announced.

Autumn rites listed in the shrine's official annual calendar:

  • Autumn festival entertainment (noh by firelight, gagaku evenings and more): Sep 19–23

Prayer services (gokito): on Sep 20 (Sun) and Sep 21 (Mon) no prayer services are held in the morning because of the autumn rites. On both days they start at 13:00. Reception is at the Judoshо east of the tower gate on the 20th, and moves to the first-floor lobby of Ikuta Jinja Kaikan on the 21st (an Inu-no-hi day).

Can I receive a prayer service during the autumn festival?
On September 20 (Sun) and 21 (Mon) prayer services are not available in the morning due to the autumn rites; on both days they begin at 13:00.

When are the noh and gagaku evening performances?
