Kitano Tenmangu Shrine

北野天満神社

A shrine at the very top of the Kitano Ijinkan district, at the head of Kitano-zaka. It is said to have been founded in 1180, when Taira no Kiyomori brought the deity over from Kyoto's Kitano Tenmangu to guard the new capital at Fukuhara, and it enshrines Sugawara no Michizane. The grounds look out over Sannomiya's towers to Kobe Port, and entry is free.
