Venus Bridge : Things to See & Do

The bridge takes its name from 1874, when a French expedition observed the transit of Venus from Mt. Suwa. Climb the emerald-green spiral and Kobe's streets and harbor spread out below. At the Venus Terrace viewpoint stands the "Love Key Monument," making this a favorite spot for couples. The daytime view is good, but the magic starts after sunset — for a free spot you can walk to, the view is hard to believe.

Night View on Foot

No ropeway or car needed — just a hillside walk from downtown to a free panorama of Kobe's lights and harbor.

Venus Bridge : Photo Spots & Tips

Best Shots

  • — Shoot the loop from the upper span with the city behind it
  • — Use a telephoto from Venus Terrace to frame the harbor lights

Best Timing

  • — Blue hour around sunset
  • — Mornings give front light on the green bridge and clear cityscape

The hillside path has little lighting at night — bring a small light for the walk.

Access

【Public Transport】
Take Kobe City Bus Route 7 from Sannomiya to 'Suwayama-koen-shita', then walk 15–20 minutes uphill.
On weekends and holidays from spring to autumn, City Bus Route 25 stops at 'Venus Bridge' (daytime only).

【Car】
Via Futatabisan Driveway; free parking (about 30 cars) next to Venus Terrace.

Note

The area is quiet at night, so visiting with someone is recommended. Venus Terrace is at the top of the spiral.

FAQ

Is the night view from Venus Bridge free?
Yes. Both the bridge and the Venus Terrace viewpoint are open 24 hours with no admission fee.
Can I walk there from Sannomiya?
Yes — it's about 20 minutes on foot from Sannomiya or Motomachi to Suwayama Park, then a 15-minute uphill walk. Bring a light at night, as the path is dim.
Where does the name come from?
In 1874, a French expedition observed the transit of Venus from Mt. Suwa. The observation site is still called Kinseidai — 'Venus Platform'.
