Why You Should Visit
Yokokuji, the Nagaokakyo temple known as Yanagidani Kannon and revered for its Kannon of the eyes, opens its usually closed Kamishoin hall for nine days. Inside, the temple displays its Edo-period Rakuchu Rakugai folding screens, which depict Kyoto's streets and daily life of around 400 years ago in fine detail, and you can view them up close. Visitors receive a commemorative postcard. The temple sits in the hills of the Nishiyama range, so plan on about half a day including a walk around the grounds. A good fit for anyone interested in Japanese screen painting or temple architecture.
