An exhibition where designs chosen through an open call are turned into real Kyoto confections (kyogashi) by professional confectioners. 2026 marks 400 years since Emperor Go-Mizunoo's imperial visit to Nijo Castle in 1626, and the theme is the "Kan'ei Imperial Procession Scroll". The main venue is Yuhisai Kodokan, within walking distance of Imadegawa and Marutamachi subway stations, where you can also have kyogashi with matcha. A second display, with its own tea-and-sweets set, is held at the Former Mitsui Family Shimogamo Villa. A good pick for anyone curious about wagashi design and tea culture.

TICKETS / REGISTRATION: Advance tickets for Yuhisai Kodokan are sold online. A special limited set with exclusive sweets and a tenugui towel (3,500 yen) and a tea ceremony experience (6,000 yen) are also available by reservation.

FAQ

Is admission free for children?

Yuhisai Kodokan is free for junior high school age and under. At the Former Mitsui Family Shimogamo Villa, junior high and high school students pay 300 yen and elementary students 200 yen.

Can I taste the confections?

Yuhisai Kodokan offers a tea ticket (kyogashi and matcha, 1,200 yen), and the Former Mitsui Family Shimogamo Villa offers a tea-and-sweets set (1,100 yen, admission separate). The villa's tea sweets are "Mirai e" (Toward the Future), "Hana no Kage" (In the Shade of Flowers) and "Karaguruma" (Chinese Carriage).

Do the two venues charge separately?

Yes. During the exhibition there is a mutual discount: proof of entry to Yuhisai Kodokan gets you the group rate at the Former Mitsui Family Shimogamo Villa, and proof of entry to the villa takes 50 yen off a Kodokan general ticket.
