Why You Should Visit

Joyo, a tea-growing city south of Kyoto, holds this festival every October at Arami Shrine to showcase its local tea. The grounds host a matcha tea seat, a class on brewing tea properly, traditional Japanese music, stalls selling matcha products such as tea soba and ice cream, and displays and sales of various teas. Just a 5-minute walk from JR Nagaike Station, it fits easily into a half-day trip around southern Kyoto.
