Why You Should Visit

A free evening performance of dengaku, a Heian-period performing art, on Nakanoshima, an island park in the middle of the Uji River. Dengaku dancers move in symmetrical formations while playing distinctive instruments such as the binzasara, a clapper made of wooden slats, and Uji is said to have once been home to a professional dengaku troupe known as the Honza. The art later died out here, and since 1998 a citizens' committee has revived it as the Uji Dengaku Matsuri, with locals from elementary school age up performing as dancers and musicians. As dusk falls over the Uji River, you can watch a Heian-era art up close.

About Uji Dengaku

  • In the Heian period a troupe called the Honza, based in Shirakawa in Uji, is said to have performed dengaku at the Uji Rikyu Festival and elsewhere
  • The Uji Dengaku Matsuri committee began reviving it in 1998 and in 2001 started creating its own citizen-made work under the name Uji Dengaku
  • Performers, from elementary school children to adults, are recruited from the public each year and rehearse more than ten times from June until the show
