Why You Should Visit
Shogoin, head temple of the Shugendo mountain-ascetic tradition, opens its normally closed Shinden hall to the public each autumn. The Shinden, which once served as a temporary imperial palace for Emperor Kokaku, holds about 180 gold-leaf screen and wall paintings by Kano Einou and Kano Masunobu, and around 120 of them are on view up close. This year the opening is part of the 400th anniversary of the Kan'ei imperial procession, with an exhibition on Emperor Go-Mizunoo and Shogoin: the interior of the shoin hall (an Important Cultural Property) said to have been designed with the emperor's involvement, plus his calligraphy, including three works shown for the first time. Open on set days, mainly Fridays, weekends and holidays.
