Why You Should Visit

For four days, bonsai and suiseki (viewing stones) entered from across Japan fill Miyako Messe in Kyoto's Okazaki district. 2026 marks the 46th Nihon Bonsai Taikanten, organized by a committee that includes the Japan Bonsai Cooperative Association, Kyoto City, the Kyoto Shimbun and KBS Kyoto, with backing from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There is also a sales corner on site. As an indoor show it works in any weather, and it is easy to pair with Heian Shrine and the Okazaki museums nearby. Children of elementary school age and under get in free.
