Why You Should Visit

Honen-in, a quiet temple tucked into the hillside of Shishigatani near the Philosopher's Path, opens the inside of its buildings to the public for just seven days each autumn, from November 18 to 24. On ordinary days visitors can only walk the grounds beyond the thatched gate, but during this period you can enter the main hall and see the principal Buddha image and sliding-door paintings attributed to Kano Mitsunobu up close. The interior is opened only twice a year, in spring (April 1–7) and in autumn. The dates fall in the middle of the Higashiyama foliage season, so it fits easily into a half-day walk along the Philosopher's Path and Ginkakuji.
