Why You Should Visit
Kyoto Prefecture's Board of Education opens the scaffolding of two Important Cultural Property buildings under restoration for a few days a year. On 2 December you can watch the framework of the three-storied pagoda at Konkai Komyoji being dismantled; on 8 December you see the roof framework of Chion-in's Seishido Hall being assembled. Each day covers one site, with four tours of about an hour. Tours are free, but you must apply in advance and places are allocated by lottery. A rare chance to see traditional timber joinery that is only exposed while repairs are under way.
