cost: Strolling the lantern-lit streets is free. The former Sugiyama Residence charges 400 yen (adults) / 200 yen (children); yukata rental from 1,200 yen; festival games 100 yen a go.
Venue & access: Tondabayashi Jinaimachi historic district A short walk from Tondabayashi or Tondabayashi-nishiguchi stations on the Kintetsu Nagano Line. There is no dedicated parking nearby, so please come by public transport.

Why You Should Visit

A summer night when about 1,000 paper lanterns light the streets of Tondabayashi's Jinaimachi, a temple-town district with 460 years of history and rows of Edo-period townhouses. Residents, shopkeepers and children light each lantern by hand from around 18:30, wrapping the white walls and wooden lattices in soft light. Side programmes include the Mido Toro at Koshoji Betsuin temple, a special showing of the Sugiyama Residence's painted screens, bamboo lanterns and yukata rental. One of Osaka's most atmospheric evening strolls.
