Why You Should Visit

An autumn rite at Sumiyoshi Taisha in which rice grown in the shrine's sacred paddy is harvested and offered to the gods together with the five grains. Tradition holds that Empress Jingu laid out tribute goods here as a market, making this the first "ichi" in Japan and the root of Osaka as a merchant city. Because measuring boxes (masu) were once sold at that market, the day is also called Masu-no-Ichi, and stalls of regional produce and weights-and-measures displays still line the area by the arched bridge. Sake is poured and zodiac masu boxes are handed out.

FAQ

Is there an admission fee?

Entering the grounds and watching both the rite and the market are free. Zodiac masu boxes are exchanged for a ticket handed out at the morning rite. Goods at the produce stalls are sold at each vendor's prices.

Are there food stalls?

Rather than night-festival food stalls, the area by the arched bridge fills with regional produce stands and hands-on weights-and-measures booths. Food is sold at those stands, such as Nagano apples and oyaki or persimmons from Kudoyama.

What happens if it rains?

The market runs in light rain. In severe weather the programme may change, so follow the guidance given at the shrine on the day.
