Why You Should Visit
At 10:00 on 13 January, an archery ritual takes place on a special ground in front of the First Main Sanctuary. Also called Oyumi-hajime, it draws on the legend of Empress Jingu: arrows offered at the altar are shot at a large target to drive away evil and pray for peace. Ten ceremonial rounds are performed in the ancient style by members of the Osaka Kyudo Federation, and the ritual is said to clear away misfortune and invite good luck. The twang of bowstrings in the hushed grounds closes the New Year season.
