Sumiyoshi Taisha White Horse Ritual 2027

Why You Should Visit

At 11:00 on 7 January, the shrine's sacred white horse Shirayuki-go visits each of the four main sanctuaries with priests, then gallops through the grounds. The ritual traces back to the Heian-era court ceremony Aouma no Sechie, and seeing a white horse at the start of the year is said to ward off bad luck for the year ahead. Shirayuki-go is a purebred Dosanko with rare red eyes. A special goshuin stamp and bamboo horse charm are offered only on this day.

Do I need a reservation?

The official information does not mention advance booking. The horse's route is cordoned off on the day, so follow on-site guidance for viewing.

When can I get the special goshuin?

The White Horse Ritual goshuin and bamboo horse charm are offered only on 7 January. It gets busy, so allow extra time at the amulet office before or after the ritual.
